New taxi model a map for peace

A taxi industry operating along established business practices, aligned to meet the challenges of the future, is a development undoubtedly much awaited by all.

A taxi industry operating along established business practices, aligned to meet the challenges of the future, is a development undoubtedly much awaited by all.

This explains the public's impatience at the snail-paced recapitalisation programme, which aimed to replace the ageing taxi fleet with modern and safer vehicles.

A taxi sector weaned of the Mafia-like syndicates and archaic mindsets is imperative if the proposed changes to be ushered in by the recapitalisation are to become a reality and have an impact.

A model to spearhead the integration of the taxi sector into the mainstream economy has had a commendable start in North West - thanks to the provincial government. Yesterday, taxi operators in the province were given a R30million boost by the provincial government to chart the path to a streamlined and prosperous future.

The funds are to help local taxi owners diversify so as to secure their own filling stations and service workshops.

This marks the beginning of an exciting era for the taxi industry, which must be advised to market the model to other provinces.

It is also an opportunity that should be grabbed with both hands - provided taxi owners rein in their old habit of playing hardball, as they are wont to do whenever urged to move ahead with the times.
