Two police constables, who are brothers, were arrested in Limpopo for allegedly selling stolen empty beer bottles.
Constable Martinus Bezuidenhout, 33, his younger brother, Pieter, 25, together with Letjepe Mathipa, 25, appeared in the Mankweng magistrates' court yesterday and were charged with corruption and theft.
They were arrested in Mankweng, near Polokwane, after they allegedly sold the bottles for R16666 to the area's South African Breweries.
Spokesman for provincial police commissioner Calvin Sengani, Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba, said the suspects were arrested on Tuesday after a tip-off.
The policemen allegedly stole the bottles, which were stored at Mankweng police station, after they had been confiscated from unlicensed liquor outlets.
The suspects were each granted R500 bail and their case was postponed to August 23 for further investigation.
Mathipa is the manager of a tavern in Seshego.
Ramatseba said preliminary investigations had revealed that the constables had connived with Mathipa to sell the bottles confiscated by police from the unlicensed liquor outlets.
He said the brewery can only buy beer bottles from licensed liquor outlet owners.
"They managed to sell the empties to South African Breweries because Mathipa used his tavern's licence," Ramatseba said.
"It is pure corruption and we are in no way going to allow such activities by either our members or any member of the public."
