Police in Limpopo have finally arrested a woman who allegedly dumped her new- born baby under a bridge last Thursday.
The baby boy, who was named Fortunate, is alive and well at the Nkhensani Hospital in Giyani.
He was discovered on June 21 by passers-by who informed the police.
A report from a social worker in the area says the baby was found wrapped in plastic under the bridge between the township's Sections E and D2.
Police spokesman in the Mopani district Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed yesterday they had arrested a woman after a tip-off from members of the community.
He said the 23-year-old woman confessed to being the mother of the child shortly after her arrest.
"But, as you would know, there are many procedures to follow before coming to a conclusion that the suspect was the real one we had been looking for," said Ngoepe.
He said they were waiting for a report from the social worker. A medical report and DNA tests would also be conducted on both mother and child.
"What gives us more hope is the fact that the woman made a confession that she was the one who dumped the child under the bridge. She told us of her hardships since she lost her job and the problems she experienced with her boyfriend," Ngoepe said.
He said the woman would appear in the Giyani magistrates' court today on a charge of attempted murder, alternatively of child neglect.
