Reports by Statistics SA that this country is experiencing an increasing number of infant deaths should send shock waves to all and sundry. Children in the zero to four age group are dying more than any other age group.

Reports by Statistics SA that this country is experiencing an increasing number of infant deaths should send shock waves to all and sundry. Children in the zero to four age group are dying more than any other age group.

Deaths in this group stood at 61461 in 2005 which represented 10,4 percent of all deaths.

This is alarming.

The UN children's fund has expressed dismay at this sad scenario and has called on all South Africans to stem this tide because these deaths are caused by treatable diseases.

Children are the country's future leaders. Their lives are in the hands of parents and the elderly who must monitor and protect them against abuse and neglect at all times.

A nation that does not care about its children should be ashamed of itself.
