Robber kills accomplice

Sipho Masombuka

A robber accidentally shot dead his accomplice during an armed robbery that went wrong at a spaza shop in Phomolong, Mamelodi East, Pretoria, on Wednesday night.

Tshwane police spokesman Inspector Paul Ramaloko said three suspects, one armed with a gun, accosted the owner of the shop as he was about to close at about 11pm.

"They held the owner at gunpoint and demanded money and stock but the owner would not have it and a fight broke out," said Ramaloko.

"The suspect carrying the gun fired at the owner but hit his accomplice in the stomach and he died on the scene. He fired another shot and hit the owner in the thigh.

"Two of the suspects escaped empty handed, leaving their dead accomplice behind."

The shop owner was taken to Mamelodi Hospital, where his condition was reported as stable.

No arrests have been made.
