Mwelase tired of feeding off scraps

Boxing SA's Prospect of 2007, knockout artist Bongani Mwelase, says his long wait for a showdown with South African champion Lucky Lewele has made him despondent.

Mwelase, 24, who has set boxing scenes alight with his hammer fists, says lack of action has forced him to take on Johannes Petersen in the junior middleweight division on July 6.

Mwelase, who boasts seven knockouts (six in the first round and the seventh in the second round), campaigns in the welterweight division where he is rated number four.

"I am like a dog that accepts anything thrown at it," said the well-spoken lefty. "I've got to be active."

His last fight was in March against George Mapalakane for the vacant Gauteng provincial title. Mwelase got up from the canvass in the first round to floor Mapalakane in the second.

Lewele's promoter Branco Milenkovic said he hated repeating himself all the time.

"Obviously, Bongani's handlers do not know how this industry works. Instead of calling me they run to the media," he said before announcing that Lewele will defend against Pumlani Menziwa in East London on July 13.

"Lewele will then fly to Germany in October to defend the WBC International title against Alpaslam Aguzum."

Lewele won that title against the same opponent in March.
