Three police cars were yesterday pelted with stones at Lomanyaneng village in the North West after one of their vehicles had knocked down a young girl.

Police said the nine-year-old girl died at the scene after she was hit by the vehicle as she tried to cross the road.

Lomanyaneng police spokesman Captain Job Mothibi said the death of the girl angered a group of people who witnessed accident.

"One police vehicle was damaged and the other two vehicles had their windows smashed when the mob threw stones at the police officers who had come to get statements at the scene of the accident," he said.

The mob only dispersed after the police called in reinforcements.

The policeman who was driving the vehicle has been charged with capable homicide.

Earlier, the girl and her friend had been sitting close to the road before she decided to cross over to the other side.

She was already in the middle of road when she saw the vehicle coming. It was already too late when she tried to turn back.
