A suspected robber was bludgeoned to death by an angry mob in Mpumalanga on Tuesday night.
Police said the community accused the man from Marite in Bushbuckridge of being responsible for a spate of robberies and housebreaking in their area.
The man was caught at the local shop and was severely beaten with knobkerries as the mob walked him to his family's shack to search for stolen items.
Police spokesman Constable Sydney Tshuketana could not disclose the name of the 25-year-old victim because his next of kin had not been informed about the incident. It happened while they were still at work.
"We cannot release his name because his next of kin have not been informed," he said.
Police condemned the mob killing and promised to arrest the perpetrators.
"I would like to urge the community to report any crime to the police. If they arrest the criminals they should bring them to the police station," said Tshuketana.
