Nothing beats warm clothing to ward off the bitter cold winter mornings, as the grins of the children of Akani Diepsloot Foundation will tell you.
Hand-knitted scarves and beanies were given to the foundation by the staff of insurance broking group, Glenrand MIB, as part of their employee volunteer plan.
Akani is about nurturing the children of Diepsloot physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to enable them to become informed, balanced and productive citizens.
About 500 pupils attend the Akani centre. The numbers rise to about 650 on Saturdays when volunteers do their bit. Some of the subjects taught are sport, life skills, food and clothing aid, physical education and spiritual guidance.
Akani is professionally structured with the principal Suretha Zhang heading a dedicated staff of 11 teachers carefully selected for their empathy with children, an operations manager and social worker.
"This organisation brings real benefits to the community of Diepsloot. We are only too pleased to make our own small contribution towards its goal of improving the lives of so many needy youngsters" says Glenrand's Derek Watson.
