SABC distorts the truth about soccer on TV

Mark Twain once said: "Get the facts first. You can distort them later." It is pathetic to see the SABC reverting to its tried and tested modus operandi of propaganda after failing to secure exclusive rights to broadcast PSL matches for the next five years. These were awarded to SuperSport.

SABC is now fabricating lies to try to deceive soccer lovers that we are the losers in this deal. Sadly, its group chief executive, Dali Mpofu, is using taxpayers' money to bankroll this campaign, aimed at coercing and compelling the public not to have the right to choose, because this is what the new deal is bringing us.

The bottom line is that the SABC is the real loser here and not the soccer-loving nation. This is what democracy is all about - the right to choice and competition.

Here are some of the facts about the deal that the SABC is failing to bring to the public's attention.

Of the 261 games that will be broadcast next season, 151 will be screened by the free-to-air TV channel. SuperSport will broadcast only 110 of these.

This means ordinary households, which can't afford decoders, will still be able to watch all the cup finals and derbies.

People will now be able to see more than one live midweek match, regardless of the day.

And, finally, more Mvela League games will be broadcast.
