A woman from Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal, has been arrested for allegedly abducting a 10-year-old boy with the aim of using him to dubiously access a child grant.
The suspect, the boy's relative, allegedly stole the child when she visited his family on Saturday.
The family said they expected the suspect to stay for a few days, and were surprised when she said she was leaving two hours later.
Police spokesman Jabulani Mdletshe said when she left, the suspect asked the child and other children to escort her to the bus stop.
"At the bus stop the suspect sent the other children to a nearby shop, leaving her with the child. When they returned, the suspect and the child were nowhere to be found."
But police arrested the suspect later the same day in the Nkundusi area.
"There are claims that the suspect stole the child with the aim of using him to apply for a child grant for herself," Mdletshe said.
She is expected to appear in court soon.
