Deciphering Broadband lingo

lAsymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL)

lAsymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL)

This option offers "always on" Internet access over a phone line for a flat fee per month. For the lucky few Telkom subscribers within a short distance of an exchange, it's probably the best choice.

lIntegrated services digital network (ISDN)

It's faster than a traditional dial-up modem with the added benefit of the phone not being engaged while the user is online. But every minute of surfing the web during the day clocks up Telkom's local call rate of 38c.

lHigh-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA)

Vodacom and MTN offer this wireless broadband technology via their cellphone networks. It's more expensive than 3G wireless broadband offerings, but worth it according to MyADSL's tests.
