Masterful maskandi musician Phuz'ekhemisi Mnyandu yesterday toasted all "unborn stars" who will fill his "big shoes".

Phuz'ekhemisi partnered with Gallo, Nedbank and Toyota to launch the maskandi traditional music star search in Durban.

"This is a true celebration of local, handmade maskandi music. It symbolises a new beginning," he said.

"It will help revive the threatened culture of traditional music."

Mohamed Saloojee, head of mass marketing at Nedbank, said: "The vision of the initiative is to unearth music talent across the country."

Of nine finalists, three winners get a recording deal with Gallo and one winner a Toyota Corolla.
