The Mpumalanga government has allocated more than R60 million to the Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency (Mega) in this financial year to encourage investment in the province.

This was revealed by the MEC for economic development and growth, Craig Padayachee, during his budget speech in Nelspruit yesterday.

Padayachee said Mega had concluded a foreign direct investment project worth R5 million and that more projects would be implemented this financial year.

He said the agency had also attracted six local investment projects worth R51 million, with a further 13 still to be implemented.

Padayachee said: "Mega also exposed 27 new SMME exporters - including those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds - to new markets through exhibitions.

"This has generated exports to the value of R22 million."

Padayachee said the success of the Mega programmes depended on partnerships with other institutions.

"Mega has entered into partnerships with Seda, the IDC, Enablis and KMIA," he said, adding that Mega would consolidate all processes of the previous year.
