The Vaal community is mourning the death of veteran teacher Gloria Fikile Gumbi- Zondi.

Known to all as MaZondi, she was born on November 1 1942 in Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal. Zondi started her primary education at Winterton and proceeded to Cornfields where she completed high school.

She then enrolled at Applesbosch College where she graduated with a teaching diploma. Her first teaching job was at Skietsdrift in 1962. The next year she married James Zondi and they had five children.

She moved to the Estcourt District in 1966 to teach at KwaBhekuzulu Primary School. In 1973 she started at Ntabankulu Primary School in Sebokeng.

It was while teaching at Ntabankulu that she furthered her studies as "she believed education was the key to success". She obtained a Bachelors degree at Vista University in Vereeniging, but, because of ill health, she could not complete her honours degree.

She was the principal at Ntabankulu Primary School until she retired in 2002. She lost her long battle against diabetes on June 7 after being admitted to hospital on May 25.

Mazondi is survived by two children, daughter Sibongile, son Sanele and three grandchildren, Simphiwe, Lindiwe and Sinethemba.

She will be buried in Sebokeng tomorrow after a service at the Assembly of God Church in Zone 11, which starts at 8am.
