Retired senior nursing sister Dolores Helen Mokoele of Atteridgeville, Pretoria, was a strong and courageous woman.
After miraculously surviving a horror crash in which three of her colleagues died in 1990 on their way back from a nursing conference, she continued to serve diligently in the profession she so loved despite having lost the use of one hand in the accident.
She carried out her chores, including cooking and cleaning, without complaint.
But last Thursday the long and tough journey she had travelled came to a halt.
She died peacefully at a city hospital after suffering serious complications.
Sis Dolores, as she was affectionately known, has left an indelible mark of respect for her hard work and courage in the nursing fraternity and among the local community.
Born on June 26 1946, she completed her primary education at Rosettenville, Johannesburg, and matriculated at Hebron College.
She pursued her career in nursing in the late 1960s and after qualifying as a midwife at King Edward VIII Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal she worked in Limpopo for a number of years. She then moved to Kalafong Hospital near Atteridgeville until she retired in September.
She married Vincent "Price" Mokoele in 1976 with whom she had four children.
Mokoele is survived by her husband, three children, five brothers and a sister.
She will be buried at Zandfontein Cemetery near Lady Selborne tomorrow. The funeral service will be held at the Evangelical Luthern Church in Tlale Street, Atteridgeville, from 7am.
