Boxing feast on the cards

Bongani Magasela

A feast of boxing is on the cards for fight enthusiasts in Soweto this weekend.

Action starts tonight at Orlando Communal Hall and ends at Jabulani mall tomorrow afternoon. Two South African titles will be up for grabs in these tournaments, which are part of the June 16 commemoration.

Peter Mashamaite's super middleweight belt will be on the line against William Gare tonight while Moruti Mthalane's flyweight belt will be up for the taking against Xola Sifama tomorrow.

Tonight's championship will be co-promoted by Peoples Boxing Promotions and the Gauteng department of sport.

Tomorrow afternoon's clash will be staged jointly by Rainbow Boxing Promotions and Tata Motors.

Promoter Obed Molekwa announced that the winner tonight will be presented with the Heroes belt. Mashamaite's stablemate Vincent Vuma won it on its introduction last year after his fifth-round stoppage of Sipho Mukhithi for the South African junior middleweight belt.

Mashamaite and Gare's war talk during the week set the tone for a battle. The champion, whose skills are honed by Nick Durandt, swore to stop Gare in three rounds but the challenger warned Mashamaite to stop day-dreaming.

This fight will be broadcast live on Blow by Blow at 10pm.

Mthalane should retain his flyweight title against Sifama.

The clash between Pius Dipheko and Collin Mayisela is expected to be a fierce one. It could be termed a title eliminator.
