The South African Local Government Association (Salga) will not appeal a court ruling allowing its workers to take part in a sympathy strike today.

Mogomotsi Mogodiri, head of communications at Salga, said: "We accept the decision."

Salga yesterday brought an urgent application to the labour court in a bid to prevent about 120000 municipal workers, represented by the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu), downing tools.

Judge Johan van Niekerk said Samwu had indicated that they did not intend to call on members engaged in essential services to participate in the one-day strike.

Samwu general secretary Walter Theledi said: "We knew we were going to win. Salga just wanted to appease their friends in government."
