It's official - the Volkswagen Polo is indeed the most popular car in South Africa.

The latest figures from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers (Naamsa) show the Polo is first on the new car sales rankings.

One does not need to be a rocket scientist to see why the Polo is doing so well. Ask any Polo driver about their car and they will tell you it is truly the best little car they have ever driven.

If you ask the non-Polo drivers what hatchback or small sedan they envy, chances are they will name the Polo.

Though the Polo has been around for quite some time now, it has undergone a slight face-lift to make its design more contemporary.

Apart from its great looks, it is a solid package with good quality finishes and equally impressive standard features at an excellent price.

Our used test model had only done 36000km, which explains its superb condition.

The car's interior is neat and clean with no scratches.

The same goes for the exterior. Our test car, a Polo Classic with a bigger boot, makes the car ideal for everyday use.

You will also have no problem when you hit the road to your favourite holiday destination knowing there is more than enough space for your luggage.

The interior of the Polo creates a feeling of space and there is sufficient legroom for passengers sitting at the back.

The layout of the controls looks nice. They are easy to operate from the driver's position.

The four-cylinder 1,6i power plant delivers 74kW and 140Nm.

The five-speed manual gearbox delivers power directly to the front wheels.

It won't take you much more than 11 seconds to reach the 100kmh mark.

The car will feel light at around 200kmh, way above the legal speed limit on South African roads.

What makes the Polo even more fun to drive is the smooth transmission of the gears. Though it uses a very basic gearbox, hanging gears is effortless, making it very appealing to women drivers.

The Polo is most certainly not just a basic model.

It comes with electric windows, dual airbags, power steering, central locking, air conditioning and a front-loading CD player.

Most impressive aspect is the price. At R125995, you also get the balance of the factory warranty of three years or 100000km.
