Police probe golf drives on par with racism

Frank Maponya

A Phalaborwa, Limpopo, man has sustained injuries to his jaw after a suspected racially motivated attack this week.

The incident happened at the Hans Merensky Golf Estate in Phalaborwa on Monday. Michael Moagi, of the nearby Namakgale Township, said he was playing golf with his friends at about 11am when the attack took place.

He said they were playing at hole 16 and his alleged attackers were at the nearby hole 10 when the latter suddenly started hitting the balls in their direction.

The 37-year-old teacher at a school in Acornhoek, Bushbuckridge, said a ball hit him so hard on his right jaw that he fell unconscious.

Phalaborwa police spokesman Inspector Chris Nel said they were investigating a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Charles Preece, a manager at the Hans Merensky Golf Estate, confirmed the incident but said it was impossible to aim a golf ball at a person.
