A 30-year-old man handed himself over to Mpumalanga police yesterday after allegedly holding his 16-month-old daughter by her legs and bashing her head against at least 14 window panes until she died.
The man, who saidhe was possessed by Satan, was allegedly jealous because he suspected that his wife was sleeping with another man.
The man, who is expected to appear before the Acornhoek magistrates' court to face a murder charge with aggravating circumstances today, allegedly killed the child after an argument with her mother on Monday evening.
Police said the assault happened at the home of the 27-year-old mother's parents at Buffelshoek, near Acornhoek, at about 8.30pm.
The man allegedly knocked at the woman's bedroom door where she was sleeping with her baby. He then threatened to break the door if she did not open it because he suspected she was sleeping with another man.
"The woman refused to open the door but did so when the suspect threatened to break it since he believed she was sleeping with another man. When the woman eventually opened the door, he threatened her with violence," said Acornhoek police spokeswoman Constable Zanele Sibuyi yesterday.
The woman's mother who overheard the commotion tried to intervene but she was also threatened with violence, forcing her and her daughter to flee from the scene, leaving the baby inside the house.
"The suspect allegedly entered the house from where he picked up the baby and held her by her legs before starting to smash her tiny head against the windows of different houses breaking all the window panes," said Sibuyi.
Sibuyi said when the suspect realised that the child who was crying uncontrollably was still alive, he went to two houses belonging to the neighbours and banged her head against those windows as well.
Shocked neighbours called the Acornhoek police to the scene but the suspect had already fled when they arrived. The two women returned to find the girl bleeding from the nose, mouth, ears as well as all over the body.
Witnesses told police that after smashing the child against the windows of three houses and realising the child was dead, the suspect left her body in the middle of the yard.
Constable Sibuyi told Sowetan that the suspect confessed to police and claimed that Satan had possessed him.
