World renowned no nonsense boxing referee, Sinton Tsekeletsa, 60, from Bloemfontein in the Free State, has died.
His tutor, Stanely Sono, 71, the longest boxing serving official, told Sowetan yesterday that his pupil, who was born in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth died on Saturday at his home in Bloemfontein.
"He had been ill for quiet some time. He was asthmatic", said Sono, who honed Tsekeletsa's skills in the South African Amateur Boxing Union.
Sono was the general secretary while Tsekeletsa was Sono's deputy.
They both moved over to the professional ranks where Tsekeletsa developed himself to being a top referee and judge. Sono, who is currently serving Boxing SA as weigh-in master and time- keeper, described the fallen stalwart as the pillar of strength in the establishment and development of boxing in the Free State.
Tsekeletsa and Dick Nkuna, who is Boxing SA's service provider, were preparing to host the SA junior featherweight fight between holder Oscar Chauke and Luyanda Mrawuli on June 22.
It will be staged by Mbali Zantsi of Showtime Boxing Promotions at Mangaung Indoor Centre.
