A pregnant woman was one of three people who died in a road accident in Durban on Saturday.

Chris Botha, Netcare 911 spokesman, said they responded to a call in which a car with three occupants was smashed up after going into the rear of a heavy goods vehicle.

"Paramedics were not prepared for the horrific sight they were about to face.

"There were three people in the vehicle; a male in his 50's, a pregnant woman and another woman in her 50's. All the occupants were killed in this tragic accident," Botha said.

l A four-month-old baby was saved after a car in which he was travelling with three other occupants overturned.

"We were shocked to find a four-month old boy who had been ejected from the vehicle. The baby was laying very still and was hardly breathing until he was resuscitated by paramedics. They managed to stabilise the child. They worked heroically and managed to save the baby's life," Botha said.

The baby could not be taken to a state hospital because of the ongoing national strike.

An ambulance had to race the baby to St Anne's Hospital in Pietermaritzburg because it was the only hospital with a paediatric intensive care unit bed left. The other patients were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

l At the Durban beachfront, a group of people were enjoying a ride on the cable car when four people got trapped in their cable car several metres above ground.

"When we arrived, we discovered that there was no way to get the fire department ladder close enough to rescue them," Botha said.

"Inspector Troy Allison and other paramedics trained in 'rope rescue' managed to set up a system to bring the people to safety."
