Soweto police are baffled and are trying to establish why a 63-year-old man was killed by someone he was trying to help.

David Matjele of Orlando East was asleep in his home at about 11pm on Tuesday when he heard someone banging the door and screaming for help, saying he was being attacked.

Matjele opened the door and let the man into the house. He then locked the door to prevent the alleged attackers from entering.

"I also heard the screams at about 11pm," said his brother Dan Mokoena. "But when I saw my brother attending to the guy I went back to my room."

Mokoena said that early in the morning her heard a commotion in Matjele's room. "When I entered the room I saw blood all over the place. My brother was lying motionless on his bed with blood oozing from his forehead."

Police said yesterday that a 24-year-old man had been arrested in connection with Matjele's death.

"Matjele had sustained serious head injuries," said Soweto police spokesman Sefako Xaba.

"We also found an iron rod next to his body."
