English Premiership giants Tottenham Hotspur want their revenge on Orlando Pirates for the embarrassment they suffered at the hands of the Soweto side back in 2003.
The message came out clear at yesterday's colourful Vodacom Challenge launch in Johannesburg. The Challenge is a three-team tournament featuring Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and a visiting foreign team.
"We are looking very much ahead to playing Pirates," said Spurs chief executive Paul Barber at the star-studded launch.
"Injuries allowing, we will be bringing our strongest possible squad. We are celebrating our 125th anniversary this year and we are happy to have part of the celebrations in South Africa.
"We lost 2-1 to Pirates and beat Chiefs 2-0. As part of our celebrations, we would make sure the result stays like the second and the first one changes."
If they bring out their full squad, then South Africa will be graced by a number of England internationals, the likes of Paul Robinson, Jermain Defoe, Jermaine Jenas, Aaron Lennon and Ledley King. Spurs also have some interesting African players such as Didier Zokora and Ahmed Mido, and Pascal Chimbonda, who was born in Guadeloupe but plays for France.
"Spurs' visit fulfils a long-cherished dream of interacting with clubs from around the world," said Kaizer Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung. "Playing in this tournament will mirror our preparedness for the new season."
Tickets for the Vodacom Challenge will go on sale at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers outlets nationwide from June 12 at R35 (east stand), R60 (north and south stands) and R100 (main grandstand).
Tickets for the derby will be on sale at R35 each.
The ticket prices have been restructured after new commercial partners came on board. They are Absa, Pep stores, Macsteel and provincial governments.
The fixtures are:
l July 21- Kaizer Chiefs v Spurs (KwaZulu-Natal);
l July 24 - Orlando Pirates v Tottenham Hotspur (Western Cape);
l July 26 - Orlando Pirates v Kaizer Chiefs (Eastern Cape); and
l July 28 - winner of July 26 match v Tottenham Hotspur (Gauteng).
