North West's Department of Transport has threatened to nullify 10000 driver's licences issued at the Potchefstroom licensing station because "they were issued irregularly".

Transport department spokesman Matshube Mfoloe, pictured, said 60percent of the licences issued at the testing station were unlawful driver's licences.

Mfoloe said the irregularities were mostly experienced in the oral examinations for driver's licences.

"For oral examinations you first have to get permission from the province's MEC. Fifty percent of the licences were issued without the necessary permission," said Mfoloe.

The Potchefstroom Driver Trainers Association said it wanted the public protector to intervene in the matter because the licence holders were not at fault.
