Thousands of workers in the public services sector across the country have embarked on a strike after the wage dispute with the government.
When Sowetan visited the hospital yesterday it found members of the South African National Defence Force, volunteers from private institutions and student nurses attending to patients.
The first stop was at the casualty ward where patients were being admitted.
The process was running smoothly. The orderly who helped incoming patients said there was no strain at all. The other wards were full and all beds occupied. The wards visited included males', females' and children's.
The dispensary was manned by two staff members who dispensedmedicines.
The laundry was deserted. A security guard said workers had arrived earlier in the morning but did not do any work.
Striking workers had gathered at the gate from early morning. They picketed outside the hospital premises during lunch time. - Vusi Ndlovu
