More so because Safa's interim chief executive, Sbu Mngadi, comes across as a cool head who knows what he is doing. Mngadi and his team were also meticulous and thorough in head-hunting their man (the team manager).
When Sipho Nkumane was announced as the man "uniquely qualified to lead the process of rebuilding Bafana Bafana administratively", I was among those satisfied with a job well done. Nkumane is one of SA football's rising soccer administrators and carries a seal of approval not only from the regional Cosafa and the Confederation of African Football but also Fifa.
However, when Madlokovu turned around and announced that Gugu Marawa would be the co-pilot, I could not help but wonder who had leaned on him to effect the second appointment. Before some bone-heads - again - accuse me of envy, let me quickly clarify my concerns.
Who do we blame when players' visas are arranged in transit as happened on the way to Chad where the flight had to be delayed in Libreville, Gabon, to have players' visa photos taken, or Stanton Lewis' plane ticket is not paid for? Marawa has to also run the coaches' department (head coach, two assistants, goalkeeper trainer and physical trainer's office) which is equally demanding.
Nkumane's lack of involvement in last week's issue around Benni McCarthy gave me the sense that the new manager is already redundant.
Some could argue it was a fraction too early to throw the man at the deep end, but what precedent are we setting by involving Carlos Alberto Parreira in resolving the impasse between a player and the association?
Are we saying it is okay for certain player management stables to deal directly with the head coach as that will be the ultimate?
We have experienced what happens with such an arrangement. When Zola Dunywa quit the job after falling out with Carlos Queiroz, it opened the gates for some sharks who have nothing but selfish interests.
When Stanley Tshabalala took over it was clear from his first day in office that he will not last. Thereafter, Raymond Hack tried to put up some resistance and he is currently one of the most hated administrators.
Suddenly, Safa vice president Mohammed Mubarak owes McCarthy a public apology. For those in the know, it is very easy to determine why. The challenge for Safa is to identify this cartel that wants to run Bafana Bafana by remote control.
