ANC stays mum on council row

The ANC yesterday refused to be drawn into the recent turbulence in the Polokwane municipality where some councillors are baying for the blood of executive mayor Thabo Makunyane.

Tensions have been rising in the council where Makunyane has been accused of mismanagement and asked to resign.

Last week there was speculation that a high-level meeting of the ANC leadership in Limpopo had resolved to deploy Makunyane to the legislature.

Other councillors claimed he had been sacked.

Though ANC provincial secretary Cassel Mathale declined to comment on the matter, it was understood that the warring factions in the council had submitted to the party. A final decision is expected today.

Some councillors aligned to Makunyane claim there was "a calculated conspiracy against the mayor" by others.

The ANC feared the bickering would affect service delivery in Polokwane. Makunyane declined to comment on the matter. - Khangale Makhado
