Busi Mhlongo, pictured, the ailing music icon who is receiving treatment for lung cancer, has been thrown a lifeline by her fellow musicians.

Local artists will participate in a benefit concert on June 30 to raise funds for Mhlongo. The concert will take place at the Absa Stadium in Durban where more than 30 musicians will perform.

The music sensation was recently admitted to hospital.

She was released after treatment and is now being cared for at home.

About two weeks ago Mhlongo underwent a mastectomy and still needs chemotherapy. But the Durban-based artist cannot afford the treatment.

Speaking from her home in Durban, Mhlongo said: "I thank all the artists for coming up with this idea. I wish you all good health."

A committee comprising musicians such as Tu Nokwe, Somizi Mhlongo, Mzwakhe Mbuli, Doc Shebeleza, Thandiswa Mazwai, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, recording company executive Tshepo Ndzimande and artist manager Thami Kotlolo are the brains behind the concert.

SABC head of communications, Kaizer Kganyago, said the public broadcaster's initiative to formalise its relationship with musicians would support the benefit concert.

Former Gallo deputy chief executive and independent record label owner Sipho Sithole has been appointed to drive the SABC process.

"And to demonstrate how serious the SABC takes this process, Sithole will be reporting directly to the chief executive of the SABC," said Kganyago.

The musicians who will take part in the concert include Sipho Hostix Mabuse, Judith Sephuma, Rebecca Malope, Kelly Khumalo, Mandoza, Lesego, Vusi Mahlasela, Lundi and Ringo.
