The Eastern Cape Department of Roads and Transport has budgeted R1,5million for its internship programme, which targets unemployed graduates in the province.

The department said it was going to provide 56 graduates with a year's internship programme. The interns will receive monthly stipends.

Spokesman for the provincial Department of Roads and Transport, Ncedo Kumbaca, said graduates who are in possession of diplomas will receive a R2226 monthly stipend, and those with degrees will receive R3378.

"The interns will work in the different directorates of the department of roads and transport," said Kumbaca.

He said each directorate will nominate mentors for the interns. The mentors will ensure that the graduates receive relevant training.

"This initiative is aimed at addressing the challenge of unemployment facing the youth of this country."
