August happy with players

Banyana Banyana's preparations for their Olympic qualifying game against Zimbabwe on Sunday are on track, after a series of games aimed at improving their coordination and teamwork.

After the introduction of Theresa Biggs, Belinda Nkosi and Gloria Thato to the team, coach August Makalakalane also thought the girls could do with a little fun, and so arranged for them to play a five-a- side indoor soccer match on Tuesday.

"Most of these girls have been involved in the Vodacom playoffs at the weekend, and they are exhausted. The game has afforded them a chance to relax and have some fun," Makalakalane said.

"But there are some benefits as the different ball and small surface improved their balance and coordination and can help with technique."

The girls were scheduled to play against the High Performance Centre team late yesterday, and then take a break from intense training today and tomorrow.

The coach said he was satisfied with the way things were going in his camp, and that the recall of Nkosi - who was the top striker in the playoffs with nine goals - was bound to give the team options.

This is because Portia Modise will be unavailable after joining a Swedish team.

"Lena Mosebo is on suspension, but I have Gloria to operate at left-back in her absence.

"I am also very happy with the progress made by Theresa. This is an opportunity for all the new players to make their mark," said Makalakalane.

The coach, who is also suspended, will be replaced on the bench by assistant Anna Monate.
