Topless VW is oh so sexy

I have always contended that convertibles are pretty much like those wafer-thin models - pretty to look at but not of much use.

But I am now happy to change this view after spending some time with one of these models - which proved to be a good ride as well.

The Volkswagen Eos is stunning - especially when it is naked with its top down. It is curvaceous and shapely. The front and the back complement each other beautifully with nothing that looks out of place. For example, the grooves that ensure that the top folds down without a hitch are continued in the front of the car to make it a design feature as well as a utility element.

The round lights at the back continue the Volkswagen design, which is not amiss inside the vehicle either.

The DSG gearbox is still a marvel. The seamless changing of the gears and the transfer of power to the wheels without so much as a squeak still makes it one of the best.

Overall the 2litre FSi model gave a good account of itself.

For its size, the Eos FSi does look small, but the Eos is not people-shy and the back seats, though not made for midgets, might struggle to accommodate someone like Kobus Wiese.

This car is best seen with its top off when the roof is safely tucked in what passes for the boot. Mind you, it is a much bigger boot when compared with some of the pretenders to the throne. But forget suitcases. A vanity and a golf bag would fit in nicely and the rest you will have to buy where you are going.

In a few seconds a normal car is transformed into a very sexy number. But with its roof up, it could easily be any car in any car park waiting for its tired owner going home to face the nagging spouse. And the spouse in this case is likely to be a man - apparently lately they nag more than women. Go figure. The Eos was made for women. Yet when a man drives it, it brings out his best touch, his feminine touch. But it does not take away his macho style.

I am waffling. It is because I loved the car. Not so much to buy, but to admire with a lovely looking woman inside.

But I would refuse to pay R378000 unless the Lotto smiles my way. And what are the chances of that happening real soon?
