A pure-bred city car is how one could refer to the cheeky little Kia Picanto, our used test car for this week. We were surprised with the fairly impressive feature list on our model.

The Korean car makers have improved their quality in vehicle manufacturing dramatically over the past few years. So much so that the Picanto's older sibling, the Rio, was a contender for last year's South African Car of the Year.

The Picanto is definitely a serious contender in the small car market, particularly in the under R100000 price range. Though the little Picanto won't get full marks for its space, there is enough for an average amount of groceries or for the kids' schoolbags. Not only will the Picanto do the "mom's little taxi" label proud, but this car is also a great student vehicle. The short measurements of this car plus the power steering make it ideal for city driving and parking is a pleasure. Performance is surely not what Kia had in mind when they developed the Picanto, but power delivery from the 1100cc three-cylinder engine is sufficient for a car doing the rounds in the suburbs. It develops 50kW and 100Nm.

With 32850km, the interior and exterior of this Picanto are in excellent condition. There were no scratches on the dashboard, the first sign of wear. The grey and black seats were very comfortable and in pristine condition. What we liked was that this little car is equipped with ABS brakes - almost unheard of in vehicles in this segment of the market. This means that braking is outstanding.

A big plus for the Picanto is that it knows how to sip. For a student there are few things more important than how much money they have to spend on fuel. Fuel consumption is a mere 6,9litres for 100km. This means you can travel more than 500km on a full 35litre tank.

Other comfort features include air-conditioning and electrically operated front windows. The 165/60 R14 tyres will be good for more than 20000km. One of the good things about buying a used vehicle from Auto Pedigree is that it comes with a free two-year 40000km Auto Pedigree warranty.

Considering this used Picanto, which still looks new, costs almost R20000 less than the new one, makes it most certainly an excellent buy.
