Bafana the key to a successful World Cup

A successful 2010 World Cup final will only be crowned by the performance of the host country, said International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge.

A successful 2010 World Cup final will only be crowned by the performance of the host country, said International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge.

Speaking during his visit to the Local Organising Committee offices last Friday, Rogge said it will be important for Bafana Bafana to do well in the tournament.

"You will need a very successful national team. The success of the World Cup depends on the success of the home team," he said.

"There is no doubt that we will have a great World Cup. Organising a big event like the World Cup or the Olympics is never easy. There are a lot of great expectations.

"The Confederations Cup [in 2009] will be the beginning of the great enthusiasm in your country. It is the same thing with the Olympics with the torch relay arrival."

Rogge, who has also visited Lesotho, Namibia and Tanzania, said he was impressed by the presentation made by the LOC on the 2010 World Cup.
