The African Methodist Episcopal Church had one of its greatest moments when its Potchefstroom branch opened a R25million multipurpose centre recently.

The centre, named the Dr Moses D Phetlu Centre after the pastor who started this project 25 years ago, was brought to completion by Reverend Themba Mbambo.

Phetlu was a pastor at the Potchefstroom church from 1968 to 1994. Construction of the centre stopped when he retired.

"The challenge was that there was not enough funding to carry this project through until Mbambo came in and revived this vision," said Phetlu.

The leader of the church in South Africa, Bishop James Davis from the US, was all praise for this initiative.

"Phetlu and Mbambo served the church, not for their personal gain, but for the benefit of the community," said Davids.

The centre accommodates about 200 children with eight teachers in daycare.

It also houses projects on sewing, arts and culture, feeding schemes and "age in action", a scheme for the elderly. There are rooms for families to rent in the hall.

Mbambo is presiding elder for the Lichtenburg district and is also a bishopric candidate for 2008.
