Parents in Folweni, south of Durban, yesterday called on KwaZulu-Natal education MEC Ina Cronje to fire a teacher accused of having sex with a grade 11 pupil at Ntwenhle High School.
The parents said the teacher allegedly impregnated a student last year. They also accused the teacher, who they said often came to school drunk, of sleeping with other pupils during school hours.
A parent, who did not want to be identified, said it was known that the teacher was having sex with pupils.
"I do not know what happened to the parental care teachers used to have. This teacher sleeps with pupils half his age," she said.
"He must be fired or we will deal with him," warned another parent.
Two weeks ago pupils burnt tyres during a violent protest at the school. The angry pupils broke windows, furniture and appliances belonging to the teacher. The pupils said they were angered after they found the teacher having sex with a student in the school's laboratory.
The provincial Education Department said the matter was under investigation and condemned the students' behaviour.
"There are channels of communication within the department. We condemn the violence," said Ntokozo Maphisa, a provincial Education Department spokesman.
"Teachers are not allowed to have sex with pupils. The matter will be investigated and the teacher will face disciplinary action if found guilty," he said.
Attempts to get comment from the teacher were unsuccessful.
