Durban's city manager Mike Sutcliffe is adamant that the government's intervention in the eThekwini name change saga is an attempt "to diffuse the threats of violence" and not because the city had done anything wrong in the process.

Last week Provincial and Local Government Minister Sydney Mufamadi asked the various stakeholders give him written submissions on what, in their views, had gone wrong with the street naming process.

Sutcliffe said there were clear threats of violence and the recent protests by the IFP were indicative of this.
