Patricia de Lille's Independent Democrats (ID) are accusing a Cape Town city councillor of trying to buy its members with cash of between R30000 and R50000 to cross over to a new party being formed in time for the September floor-crossing period.
The ID did not name the councillor, but Sowetan has learnt that the city councillor involved is allegedly Badih Chaaban, of the Africa Muslim Party, who was kicked out by Democratic Alliance mayor Helen Zille earlier this year.
It is alleged Chabaan is forming a new party called the New People's Party.
Chaaban yesterday told Sowetan he did want to form a new party, but that it was in an embryonic stage.
