MOGADISHU - Two civilians were killed and five were wounded when Somali police opened fire on gunmen who had attacked their police station in northern Mogadishu, police and witnesses said yesterday.

"Two people were killed on the spot when the police opened fire," said Mohamed Omar, who was passing by when the attack occurred late on Wednesday.

"It was too dark and the police opened fire in self-defence. Three people were wounded," said another witness, Mohamed Ahmed Abdullahi.

A police officer confirmed the incident and said two others were wounded, but did not say whether the police suffered any casualties. - Sapa-AFP
