Billboards placed by a church claiming that "Jesus... Heals Aids!" have been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

This followed a complaint that this ad might cause HIV infected people to spread the virus by misleading them into believing that they were healed.

The billboards were placed by Miracle Crusade - its contact person was given as Pastor Bonsile Eric Papa.

The ASA said that after reasonable steps were taken to get a response from Miracle Crusade, the complainant's submission that the billboard was "misleading and offensive" was accepted without opposition.

The association banned the billboard on two grounds. Firstly, because Miracle Crusade did not substantiate its claim that Aids can be cured through religious faith. South Africa's advertising rules state that marketing claims must to be backed by documentary evidence. Secondly, the billboard was ruled to be misleading.
