Mpumalanga plans to build a monument in honour of the late anti-apartheid activist, Gert Sibande.
Sibande was recently awarded the Order of Ikhamanga by President Thabo Mbeki.
Known as "The Lion of the East", Sibande was nominated by the province in recognition of his leadership during the struggle for democracy, especially with regard to fighting for the rights of the poor and farm- workers, specifically in the Bethal area.
During the 1950s he mobilised the media to help expose the plight of potato-farmworkers, whose conditions of employment were said to amount to "slave labour".
"As part of preserving our heritage, the Eastern Highveld region was renamed the Gert Sibande District Municipality," the Mpumalanga premier's spokesman, Ntime Skhosana, said.
