Disaster management officer Magezi Sithole from the Thulamela municipality has accused the police in Malamulela, Limpopo of a cover-up.

Sithole alleges his Toyota bakkie, driven by his wife, Rirhandzu, was deliberately bumped by an unidentified local chief on April 27. The bakkie, carrying seven passengers, overturned. The passengers were taken to the Malamulela Hospital, where one died .

Magezi said the chief had earlier accused his wife of illegally collecting firewood. She had to pay a R300 fine, he said.

She had been on her way home to collect the money when she saw a speeding car behind her.

The car, allegedly belonging to a chief, knocked the bakkie, which overturned. Sithole claimed police were "not interested" in the case.

Police spokesman Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe said they would do everything in their power to help the family.
