One of the greatest soccer stars of yesteryear is dead.

Former top midfielder Meadow Molala died at Kalafong Hospital in Pretoria on Saturday after a short illness.

His younger brother, Patrick, said yesterday that Molala was admitted to the hospital on Friday and died on Saturday.

"My brother suffered a lot from a combination of sugar diabetes and a lung infection.

"We'll miss him a great deal," he said.

Molala, of Atteridgeville, played for Meadowlands Celtics alongside such former stars as Irvin Dire, Mthunzi Kota, Marwick Moshoeshoe and the late Winston Radebe.

He also played for Nigel United Buccaneers and later coached Mahwelereng Motherwell, the then National Professional Soccer League second division side.

He will be buried in Atteridgeville at the weekend.
