Enos Matalane, 27, champion of the inaugural Sudwala Cave 21km Marathon, will not defend his title next season.

Matalane won the race in 1hr:14min:19sec, closely followed by Harmony Gold Club athlete Ntuthuko Maseko in 1:14:20.

"This race is exhausting and aggravates injuries. I won't defend it next year," said Matalane after winning.

On his photo finish with Maseko, Matalane said his experience came in handy.

"He was pushing me all the way but I used my experience to edge him in the last kilometre."

He said he is now looking forward to participating in the SA championship half-marathon in Durban on July 1.

July Mashego, also of Harmony, finished third in a time of 1:20:26.

Daleen Botha of Nelspruit Marathon Club won the women's section in 1:47:52.
