Enos Matalane, 27, champion of the inaugural Sudwala Cave 21km Marathon, will not defend his title next season.
Matalane won the race in 1hr:14min:19sec, closely followed by Harmony Gold Club athlete Ntuthuko Maseko in 1:14:20.
"This race is exhausting and aggravates injuries. I won't defend it next year," said Matalane after winning.
On his photo finish with Maseko, Matalane said his experience came in handy.
"He was pushing me all the way but I used my experience to edge him in the last kilometre."
He said he is now looking forward to participating in the SA championship half-marathon in Durban on July 1.
July Mashego, also of Harmony, finished third in a time of 1:20:26.
Daleen Botha of Nelspruit Marathon Club won the women's section in 1:47:52.
