A man who spent nine years in jail, without trial appeared in the Pretoria regional court on Friday.
Johan Myburg, of Pretoria, was arrested in 1998 on a charge of fraud.
Myburg said his case was always postponed for further investigation. On Friday he asked for an office where he would be able to prepare for his case.
Before the court proceedings, Julia Mashele, whose foundation helps awaiting-trial prisoners who cannot afford bail or lawyers, said: "We are not saying all the people awaiting trial are innocent.
"When Judge Ngoepe's granddaughter was murdered, the court proceedings took only two months. We want the same treatment for everybody.
"I waited for my trial for more than seven years and during that time my husband gave up on me because there was no hope and I got divorced."
Myburg is due to appear in court again on May 22. -Pertunia Ratsatsi
