Powerlifting gold medallist Christine Mhlongo of Daveyton has been motivated to work harder by her second win of the Mayoral Achievers Awards at the weekend.

The 21-year old Mhlongo successfully defended her Sport Person of the Year's (people with disabilites) title at the colourful function held at Emperors' Palace in Kempton Park.

She did Mzansi proud by winning gold medals in both the National Championships for abled and the National Championship for Physically disabled last year in Korea.

" The award is a great boost ahead of the national powerlifting championships set for Greece next month,'' said an excited Mhlongo.

She was among several recipients who were honoured by Duma Nkosi, Ekurhuleni's executive mayor, for their dedication and commitment in different categories of sports, arts, culture and heritage.

Ediya Thage grabbed the outstanding Sports Official award and Mpho Madi won the Sports- woman of the Year award.

Other winners were Wikus Weber (Outstanding Sports Administrator), Jacode De Waal (Junior Sports Person) and Richard Addinall (Sportsman of the Year).

Karate South Africa PRO, Shihan Peter Thage, was presented with a certificate for his immeasurable contribution in the martial arts.
