Popular comedian, David Kau, pictured, is now exploring opportunities in the music industry.
The comedian, who has put his comedic skills to good use for years now on stage and TV, through the Pure Monate TV show, is featured in the pennywhistle group Kwela Tebza's coming album, yet to be named.
A select audience was introduced to Kau's voice at the Palms Restaurant in Sandton on Wednesday, where Kwela Tebza held a listening session for the new album to be released next month through EMI.
Kau is among emerging black poets, including Kagiso Lediga, Loyiso Gola, and Kenneth Makenzo Nkosi, who have found a fertile ground for comedy in a post-1994 and transforming South Africa.
But Kau is featured on the album singing and not cracking those politically charged jokes of his. It is a different Kau, showing his other side on the album, singing and also creating a house and dance music version of Mparanyane's classic Moratuaa. Mparanyane is the late 1950s marabi music icon, who helped define and refine this music art form.
Kau's fans should not be di sappointed as the famous comedian insists that he is not about to give up on comedy in pursuit of glory and big bucks in the music industry.
"Comedy comes first when it comes to my career. However, I had lots of fun working with the Kwela Tebza guys. We have been working on this album for over a year now. I cannot wait for this album to be on the shelves and see how people will react to my new endeavour as a singer and not cracking jokes," Kau told Sowetan yesterday. Depending on the response of the fans to this album, Kau does not discount cutting more albums.
"My taking part in this album is important because I see it as paying tribute to a legend, Mparanyane, through reworking his song Moratuaa,"he said.
