A solid partnership between the police and the community is needed to eradicate crime in South Africa, Safety and Security minister, Charles Nqakula has said.
Nqakula was speaking at the official opening of a new police station in Mamelodi east, Pretoria, at the weekend.
The state-of-the-art- police station will serve more than 800 000 residents of Mamelodi.
Built at the cost of R16-million, the 3785 square metre police station boasts a community service centre, support services, crime intelligence centre, trauma centre and identification parade centre.
"We have to look at community policing as the basic tool in the fight against crime. The community and the police need a solid partnership if we want to deal with the issue of crime," said Nqakula.
"When the police have a solid partnership with the community there can be a breakthrough in the fight against crime."
"By the end of this year there must be no situation whereby the Community Police Forum does not understand the work they are doing," Nqakula said.
He also urged members of the police to abide by the Saps oath and perform their duties.
"Members of the police service who fail to perform their duties betray the people and they have no place in the police force," he said.
Nqakula stressed the importance of community participation in community policing forums and neighbourhood patrols.
He was accompanied to the opening by Gauteng provincial police commissioner Perumal Naidoo and assistant commissioner Ockert Terblanche.
Naidoo said: "I am sure that the police in Mamelodi will improve service delivery every day to serve the community of Mamelodi."
Terblanche said most of the work force was sourced locally and that a team from the police services had been appointed as project managers.
