The Swiss-South Africa Cooperation Initiative has donated R2,3million towards training and supporting health professionals in rural areas.

The donation was made recently to Wits University's Initiative for Rural Health Education, a division of the health sciences faculty.

The programme aims to recruit and train disadvantaged students from deep rural areas to become health professionals.

This is the organisation's second donation to the programme since its launch in 2003.

The programme has drawn close to 30 students from North West and Mpumalanga where the university has satellite research stations. - Zinhle Mapumulo
